Microblading Questions Answered!

Updated: Aug 21, 2018

A newcomer to the beauty industry, microblading offers women a chance to have a 're-do' on the brows they over plucked as teenagers, or that have thinned over time due to the aging process.  But like anything new, there are questions, and the occasional misconception. I thought I would share with you the 5 most common questions that we get, and the answers.

1. How long does it last?

Microblading typically lasts about 3 years, depending on how well you take care of them, and your skin type. Here are a few tips:

  • Always wear sunscreen on your face. 365 days a year (you should anyway if you aren't!)

  • Avoid using scrubs or exfoliator of any kind on your brows.

  • When getting facials, lasers, peels, etc., make sure to tell your esthetician that you have had microblading done, and to please avoid your eyebrow area.

  • If you have very oily skin, this can cause your brows to fade a bit more quickly. I recommend using an oil control moisturizer like Dermologica Clear Start

2. Is it a tattoo?

People have differing opinions on this. I personally do not view it as a tattoo, because the ink is not permanent, and a tattoo gun in not used for the application. However, we are depositing pigment into your skin, which is similar to the process of a tattoo. The healing process is also similar to that of a tattoo if you have ever had one.

3. Does it hurt?

Most people do not feel any pain at all, because we use numbing cream and numbing spray throughout your treatment. In fact, most of our clients fall asleep! Our treatment rooms were designed with our client's comfort in mind: calming music, aromatherapy and a comfortable spa bed. Relax, unwind, and get great brows all in one place!

4. How long does the treatment take, and what is it like?

Expect your initial treatment to take 2.5 - 3 hours:

  • Upon arrival we will have you fill out a health assessment and consent form

  • Our artist will review your assessment, ask any questions and then talk with you about your goals, the process and address any questions you may have

  • Numbing cream will be applied to your brows

  • Once your brows are numb, the brow measuring and drawing process will begin. This allows us to create a custom template for your new brows

  • You and our artist will review your brow shape, make any modifications, and determine a color.

  • The microblading process will begin. This consists of two passes, with a second numbing between. The microblading tool is a pen like instrument that holds 18 tiny needles to create the most delicate, crisp and incredibly realistic hair like strokes. This is the part where you will probably fall asleep!

  • Ta-Da! Fresh new brows revealed!

5. Is there downtime?

For the first 24 - 48 hours after your treatment, your brow area will be a little red, and you may have some minor swelling, but you should be able to resume your normal activities outside of sweaty workouts. Avoid those for 3 days. You will clean and apply a special ointment we provide to your brows for two weeks while they heal, and wear a hat and sunglasses if you are in the sun, since you cannot put sunscreen (or anything else) on them while they are healing. We will provide you with detailed care instructions, and the ointment before you leave your appointment. Expect your brows to fade 20-40%. This is completely normal. At your follow-up appointment will will go over any strokes that have faded, and add any additional strokes you desire.

I hope this helps everyone with questions about microblading! Feel free to contact us if you have a question that wasn't covered!
